Land of the long white cloud short on cloud uptake
Survey suggests IT needs to educate SMEs on cloud technology for businessBy Reseller News Staff, Auckland | Friday, 14 September 2012
A survey conducted on behalf of accounting software company MYOB suggests many New Zealand business operators are using cloud technology for business activity, the company announced this week.
Among the more than 1,000 SMEs surveyed, only 14 percent said they use the cloud for business, while 78 percent said they did not use it and 8 percent did not know.
“The cloud is very much the industry buzzword at the moment," says general manager Julian Smith. “Yet despite the technology industry’s best efforts to teach others about the concept of cloud computing, our research shows a disconnect between SME cloud usage and their understanding of it,” says Julian Smith.
Respondents cited lack of knowledge and security concerns as key barriers to their uptake of cloud technology. For those who said they were using the cloud in their business, the key drivers were their ability to access business data from various locations and their reduced exposure to IT issues.
According to the research,, businesses most likely to adopt cloud services include any with a website, those employing 20 to 199 full time employees, and gen x business owners.
As Cloud is a Vendor driven creation , is it education? Or end users not drinking the koolaid?

Looks just like a marketing survey.
Stats say that 93% of businesses use broadband
I'm sure that most small businesses use Internet banking which is very advanced in New Zealand, so that could mean more than 50% already using the cloud.
Xero has over 50,000 NZ customers so that must be most of that 14%.
Be interesting to know how many businesses use gMail. I suspect the numbers also higher than 14%.
Anecdotally we're seeing NZ businesses picking up Cloud technology faster than anywhere else - primarily because of the availability of great business solutions in the cloud.

Just to clarify, the material Reseller News received from MYOB states that the survey was conducted on MYOB's behalf by the firm Colmar Brunton. Reseller News is told that the sample set was not drawn from MYOB customers, but from a database provided by Fly Buys.

Is this survey just of 1000 MYOB customers, or 1000 businesses in general?
Because if your a MYOB customer, chances are your accounting is not SaaS based...
