IT security people get networking
1st Tuesday club a chance to get together, without hearing a sales pitch
By Hamish Barwick, Auckland | Tuesday, 11 November 2008A lack of networking opportunities for IT security industry people in Wellington has led Voco consultant Paul Hortop to launch the 1st Tuesday Club.
He says it is aimed at the wider security community, rather than just security vendors.
“It gives people a chance to network without hearing a sales pitch. Breakfast meetings don’t give much opportunity for networking because you talk to the people next to you, then the presentation happens and everyone has to rush off to work.”
Hortop, who is originally from England where 1st Tuesday clubs are running, says he had attended these meetings in London where industry people could get together once a month.
Twenty people turned up to the first event including representatives from government departments, banks and large organisations.
“We would have had more attend, but unfortunately it happened to be Melbourne Cup day.”
Hortop says he is already expecting 30 people to turn up to the next 1st Tuesday on December 2 at Confidential Bar on The Terrace.
